May 1st, I had the opportunity to do some bagpiping in Hua Hin for a birthday party at CoCo51. The birthday boy, a Scot, was quite surprised when I struck up right behind him. He let me know that it actually was a wonderful way to make him a little homesick.
A bagpipe surprise
My piping in kilt and all was set to be a surprise for the the guest of honour, which is common and not a problem. However, it always makes me a little nervous because my pipes sound better when I can get in a full loud warm-up and really dial-in the tuning. Fortunately, I had played earlier that day, so I knew my pipes were basically there already, and just needed to make a little noise upstairs in the office where I was hiding in the A/C.

A big thank you to the folk at Coco51 Restaurant & Bar, by the Sea for inviting me down and being such gracious hosts.
It was also a nice change of pace to bagpipe on the other side of the water from the weddings I had played on Koh Samui.
Getting to Hua Hin from Bangkok
Hua Hin is southwest of Bangkok, on the coast. I was fortunate to find a good private taxi company to drive me the 3 hours to Hua Hin.
- just under 3 hours to get to Hua Hin
- almost 4 hours to get back to Bangkok on holiday.
