Teaching bagpiping in Bangkok

Last year in Kuala Lumpur Highland Games, a piping judge talked to me about increasing the reach of the bagpipe world and getting students of my own in Bangkok. I did not think much of it, as I didn’t know if there would be any students wanting to take up the pipes.

Fast forward to May 2026, and I have already started teaching a young student in the Sathorn part of Bangkok; a mother has reached out that looks interested in starting lesson after the summer break, and a young 13 year-old has gotten in touch to learn how to play.

I have to say, I am very excited to be asked to help young students learn the pipes. Although I have many years experience teaching English, not as much teacher experience with the bagpipes. I love the pipes, and hope I can help other young students learn to love them like I do.

As young students, the only thing they really need is a practice chanter – preferably one with sunken holes so that the fingers can feel the holes correctly.

Lessons are genrally about an hour, and held at the students’ homes.
